The Characteristics of the Imam in Islam

The successor of the Prophet (pboh), who guarantees the continuity of the life of religion and responds to the needs of humanity, possesses qualities appropriate to the lofty position of leadership and guidance. Among these are the Characteristics of the Imam in Shia Islam.

The 12th Imam | The Characteristics of the Imam in Islam

The most important of these qualities are as follows:

  • Piety and righteousness together with the quality of infallibility, such that even the smallest sin does not occur from him.
  • Knowledge and learning that originate from the knowledge of the Prophet (pboh) and are connected to divine knowledge.
  • Adornment with the highest level of moral virtues and excellences.
  • The ability to administer and properly manage human society based on religious teachings.

Considering these attributes, it is evident that selecting such a person is beyond the capacity and knowledge of ordinary people. Only God, through His infinite knowledge, can choose the leaders and successors of the Prophet. Therefore, one of the most important characteristics of the Imam is that he is appointed by God.

Because of the importance of these characteristics, each of them will be explained briefly below.

Essential Qualities of the Imam

1. Knowledge

An Imam who holds the position of leadership and guidance of the people must fully understand religion in all its aspects and possess complete awareness of its laws. He must be capable of interpreting the verses of the Qur’an and possess comprehensive knowledge of the traditions of the Prophet so that he can answer all the questions of the people and guide them in the best possible manner.

Such a scholarly authority becomes a trusted source and a firm support for society. This profound knowledge exists through a connection with divine knowledge. For this reason, the Shia believe that the knowledge of the Imams and the true successors of the Prophet is derived from the infinite knowledge of God.

Imam Ali (AS), the first Imam, said regarding the signs and characteristics of the true Imam in Islam:

“The Imam is the most knowledgeable person concerning what God has made lawful and unlawful, His various commands and prohibitions, and everything that people need.”

2. Infallibility (ʿIsmah)

One of the most important attributes of the Imam and a fundamental condition of Imamate is infallibility (ʿIsmah).

Infallibility is a spiritual quality that arises from knowledge of realities combined with a strong will. Because of these two qualities, the Imam refrains from committing any sin or error. The Imam is protected from mistakes:

  • in understanding religious teachings
  • in explaining them
  • in practicing them
  • and in recognizing the interests and harms of the Islamic community

There are both rational and textual proofs for the infallibility of the Imam.

a. Preservation of Religion

Preserving religion and the proper way of practicing it depends on the infallibility of the Imam. Since the Imam protects religion from distortion and guides people in matters of faith, his words, actions, and even his approval or disapproval of actions influence society. Therefore, he must be protected from any error.

b. The Necessity of Trust

One of the reasons society needs an Imam is that people may make mistakes in understanding religion. If the leader were also subject to such errors, people would hesitate to trust and follow him fully.

Qur’anic Evidence

The Qur’an also indicates the necessity of the Imam’s infallibility. In Qur’an 2:124, God granted Prophet Abraham (pboh) the position of Imamate. When Abraham asked that this position also be given to his descendants, God replied:

“My covenant does not extend to the wrongdoers.”

Since the Qur’an describes shirk as a great injustice and every sin as a form of wrongdoing, anyone who has committed sin cannot hold the position of Imamate.

Therefore, the position of Imamate belongs only to those who have never committed sin.

3. Social Leadership and Governance

Human beings are social by nature, and society greatly influences their character, behavior, and spiritual development. For proper moral growth and closeness to God, a just and divinely guided social system is necessary.

For this reason, the Imam must possess the ability to manage society and establish a just system of governance. By relying on the teachings of the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet (pboh) and by utilizing capable individuals, the Imam establishes and administers an Islamic government.

4. Moral Perfection

The Imam, as the leader and guide of society, must be free from all moral vices and possess the highest level of moral virtues. As the perfect human being, he becomes the best model for people to follow.

Imam al-Ridā (AS) said:

“The Imam is the most knowledgeable, the most pious, the most forbearing, the bravest, the most generous, and the most devoted in worship among people.”

Imam Ali (AS) the 1st Imam said:

“Whoever places himself as a leader of the people must begin by teaching himself before teaching others, and he must educate people through his conduct before educating them through his words.”

5. Divine Appointment

According to the Shia perspective, the appointment of the Imam and successor of the Prophet occurs only by the command and selection of God, and the Prophet introduces the Imam after him.

No individual or group has the right to interfere in this matter.

a. Absolute Sovereignty Belongs to God

According to the Qur’an, God is the absolute ruler over all things, and authority belongs to Him alone. Just as the Prophet is chosen by God, the Imam also receives authority through divine appointment.

b. Only God Can Recognize the Required Qualities

The Imam must possess qualities such as infallibility and divine knowledge. Recognizing these qualities perfectly is only possible for God, who knows both the seen and unseen.

The Qur’an states regarding Prophet Abraham:

“Indeed, I have made you a leader for the people.”

Historical Example

It is narrated in Sīrat Ibn Hishām that the tribe of Banī ʿĀmir ibn Ṣaʿṣaʿah once asked the Prophet ﷺ whether they would gain leadership after him if they supported him.

The Prophet replied:

“The matter of leadership belongs to God; He places it wherever He wills.”

The Great Status of Imamate (Statement of Imam al-Ridā)

Imam al-Ridā (AS) described the status of the Imam with profound words:

Imamate is far greater in value and rank than people can comprehend with their intellects. It is a position granted by God to Prophet Abraham after prophethood and close friendship with God.

Imamate is:

  • the succession of God
  • the succession of the Messenger of God
  • the foundation of religion
  • the system of the Muslim community
  • the welfare of the world and the honor of the believers

Through the Imam:

  • prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, and jihad are perfected
  • divine laws are preserved
  • religion is defended
  • people are guided with wisdom and clear proof

The Imam is like the rising sun, illuminating the world while remaining beyond the reach of hands and eyes. He is also like a guiding star in darkness, leading people safely through difficulties.

He is:

  • a compassionate father
  • a sincere brother
  • a caring guardian
  • and a refuge for people in times of hardship.

Because of his unique status, no one equals him in knowledge, virtue, or rank.
